NUROPE
The Nomadic University for Art, Philosophy and Enterprise in Europe
an initiative of Cittadellarte in collaboration with the Abo Akademie
under the patronage of the European Cultural Parliament.
The second session of NUROPE will be at Cittadellarte-Fondazione Pistoletto,
with the support of the supported by Biella
Council’s «Cantieri Culturali» program financed by the Region of Piedmont,
and in synergy with the Cultural Districts project
of the Province of Biella.
Yesterday (9th February) ninety international experts and cultural operators
reached Biella in order to participate to a
multidisciplinary workshop on the synergy between art and economy. Workshop
sessions to analyse European projects and
the case study of Biella as industrial and cultural district.
Conceived by Cittadellarte in collaboration with the University of the city
of Turku in Finland, where the first session of
meetings were held in September 2006, Nurope will be in Biella, at
Cittadellarte for four days, to then move on to the last
stop on its first European tour, at Kassel (Germany), for the prestigious
Documenta event. Further stops are scheduled in
Turkey, Croatia, France, Portugal and Sweden for 2008 and 2009.
The Biella Oasis started with 86 participants welcomed by Michelangelo
Pistoletto (artistic director of
Cittadellarte), Paolo Naldini (managing director of Cittadellarte),
Karl-Erik Normann (Germany, ambassador and member of
European Cultural Parliament), Pierre Guillet de Monthoux (Sweden, professor
at the University of Stockholm) and Bengt
Kristensson (Finland, professor at the Abo Akademy University in Turku).
Nurope – the Nomadic University for Art, Philosophy and Enterprise in Europe
(www.nurope.eu/nurope_text.html) is an
initiative that enjoys the patronage of the European Cultural Parliament (www.kulturparlament.com).
This is a mobile philosophical workshop, a think-tank for reflecting on the
challenges that globalisation has laid down to
Europe and its regions, especially in terms of the creative tension and
potential for economic development implicit in the
relationship between art and business.
Nurope sets out to explore the role of art in the transformation processes
of society, organisations and business. The
fundamental conviction is that ethical and aesthetic values (the combination
of Culture & Enterprise) represent the essence
of European and contemporary societies, and, at the same time, their maximum
competitive potential.
At operative-organisational level, Nurope is articulated into a series of
events (oases), that form an annual itinerant course
(expeditions).
Each oasis consists of meetings, workshops and visits to provide graduates,
university researchers, businessmen and
personalities from the worlds of culture and economics with tools, theories,
methods and case studies to promote an
economy of knowledge and creative responsibility, and to play an active role
in the game of global competition.
Biella Oasis. Official language: English.
The Nurope oasis held at Cittadellarte is based on two lines:
on one, six structured analysis session of as many artistic experiences that,
starting out from specific problems and
socio-economic contexts, realise practical initiatives through a network of
organisations, citizens, inhabitants and public
and private bodies and institutions.
on the other, participants meeting with the leading players of the Biella
district for an understanding of the competitive
strategies they intend to pursue (among which, quoting from an as yet
incomplete list: the Associazione Tessile e Salute
(Textiles and Health Association), the ATL-local tourism agency, Centro
Studi Biellesi DocBi, Città Studi Biella, Biella The Art
of Excellence Foundation, the Biella Industrial Union, in addition to
representatives of the city council and the Province of
Biella).
